Drive in racking

  • High-density pallet storage for bulk goods
  • Maximise storage capacity by reducing aisles
  • Ideal for large volumes of identical products
  • Efficient LIFO storage for controlled stock flow

Drive in racking is a high-density warehouse storage system designed to maximise pallet capacity by significantly reducing aisle space.

Unlike conventional pallet racking, forklifts enter the racking structure directly to store and retrieve pallets. This allows multiple pallets to be stored in deep lanes, creating a compact storage solution ideal for operations handling large volumes of similar products.

When properly designed, drive in racking does more than increase storage capacity, it improves space utilisation, simplifies bulk storage and supports efficient warehouse operations.

At Oakway, we consult, design, supply and install drive in racking systems built around your stock profile, handling equipment and operational priorities.

We take time to understand how your warehouse operates to ensure your racking layout delivers both maximum storage density and safe, reliable pallet handling.

Our drive in racking systems are designed to:

  • Increase pallet storage capacity within existing warehouse space
  • Support safe forklift operation within racking lanes
  • Maximise vertical and horizontal storage density
  • Provide a reliable bulk storage solution for consistent stock profiles

The result is a warehouse storage system that allows businesses to store more product, operate efficiently and make better use of available floor space.

How Drive In Racking Works

Drive-in racking typically operates on a last-in, first-out (LIFO) storage principle. Forklift trucks enter the racking structure from a single access aisle and travel into deep storage lanes to place or retrieve pallets. Steel pallet support rails hold pallets on either side, allowing forklifts to move safely through the system while storing multiple pallets deep within each lane.
Core components usually include upright frames, pallet support rails, lane guide rails for forklift movement, rack protection, and deep storage lanes designed for high-density pallet storage.

Drive-in racking can also be configured as drive-through racking, which enables a first-in, first-out (FIFO) flow by allowing forklifts to access pallets from both sides of the system. This approach is often used in industries where products have a shelf life, such as food and beverage distribution.

For operations storing long-life or non-perishable goods, a LIFO system is often the most efficient solution for maximising storage density while handling large volumes of similar products.

Where Drive In Racking Adds Value

Drive in racking is particularly effective in warehouse environments that prioritise storage density and bulk handling.

It is well suited to operations that require:

  • High-density storage for large quantities of identical products
  • Maximum use of available warehouse space
  • Controlled and repeatable pallet handling processes
  • Efficient bulk storage rather than high selectivity

Drive in racking is commonly used in:

  • Food and beverage distribution
  • Cold storage facilities
  • Manufacturing environments
  • Third-party logistics warehouses

In these environments, reducing aisle space while maintaining efficient pallet handling can dramatically increase overall warehouse capacity.

Designed Around Your Warehouse and Handling Equipment

Drive in racking requires careful planning to ensure safe forklift movement, stable pallet support and long-term durability.

At Oakway, we assess several key factors before designing any system, including:

  • Pallet dimensions and load weights
  • Forklift type and operating clearances
  • Warehouse layout and building constraints
  • Stock profile and storage volumes
  • Operational flow and handling patterns

By designing drive in racking around real warehouse conditions, we create layouts that maximise capacity while maintaining safe and efficient operations.

Adjustable Pallet Racking

Designed as Part of a Wider Warehouse Strategy

Drive in racking is most effective when integrated into the overall warehouse layout.
At Oakway, we ensure your drive in racking system works seamlessly alongside other storage and operational systems, including:

  • Mezzanine floors
  • Industrial shelving
  • Pallet shuttle systems
  • Conveyor systems
  • Warehouse safety barriers and protection

By designing drive in racking as part of a coordinated warehouse strategy, we create environments where storage density, workflow and safety work together efficiently.

Built for Safety, Performance and Longevity

Safety and durability are critical in any drive in racking installation.

Because forklifts operate inside the racking structure, systems must be designed to withstand repeated use while protecting both infrastructure and operators.

We design drive in racking systems to support:

  • Stable pallet storage and load distribution
  • Safe forklift guidance within storage lanes
  • Rack protection to reduce impact damage
  • Long-term structural performance

Additional measures such as guide rails, column protection and warehouse safety systems can further improve reliability and operational safety.

Well-designed drive in racking doesn’t just increase capacity — it creates a durable, dependable storage system that supports long-term warehouse performance.

Is Drive In Racking Right for Your Warehouse?

Drive in racking is often the ideal solution for warehouses storing large volumes of similar products where storage density is the priority.

If your operation needs to:

  • Maximise pallet capacity within existing space
  • Store bulk quantities of identical products
  • Improve warehouse storage density

Oakway can assess whether drive in racking is the right solution for your warehouse.

STS Ltd – Drive In Racking

STS Ltd approached Oakway Storage to support them in improving the storage and access to products at their Leeds warehouse. The warehouse team were implementing new LEAN working practices and needed a range of improved storage solutions to support that. The existing situation meant the warehouse team were block stacking pallets of materials which made for inefficient pick routines.
