Bergen Logistics, a leading global third-party logistics provider, required a flexible storage and fulfilment solution for its North Shields warehouse. The operation needed to support efficient picking and packing while improving the utilisation of the building’s available cubic volume.
With new contract opportunities requiring a rapid operational response, Bergen Logistics needed to increase storage capacity without committing the entire warehouse floorplate during the initial installation. Retaining clear floor space was essential, as it would allow additional racking phases to be introduced quickly in line with contract wins and changing customer demand.
The proposed storage layout also had to operate alongside specialist materials-handling equipment, requiring careful consideration of racking heights, aisle widths and order-picking access. Power and Wi-Fi services were also required at the packing benches to support the fulfilment process.
Bergen Logistics therefore approached Oakway for a coordinated warehouse solution that could meet its immediate operational requirements while providing the flexibility to expand the installation as the business continued to grow.
Oakway worked closely with the Bergen Logistics team and its incumbent materials-handling equipment provider to design and install an integrated warehouse solution.
The installation included single-deep, light-duty adjustable racking designed specifically for the e-commerce operation. The 8.5 metre-high system used 1.2 metre-deep frames, allowing 600mm-deep cartons to be stored on either side. Aisles were set at 1.38 metres to support space-efficient order picking.
Bergen Logistics’ MHE partner developed bespoke man-up, wire-guided order pickers to operate within the racking layout. Oakway coordinated the storage design with the equipment requirements to create a practical and efficient picking environment.

By maximising the cubic volume of the building, Oakway avoided using all the available floor space during the initial installation. The layout allowed further racking phases to be added quickly as Bergen Logistics secured new contracts.
The completed installation created a flexible, high-density storage and fulfilment operation tailored to Bergen Logistics’ requirements.
Tall racking and narrow aisles made effective use of the building’s cubic volume, while the wire-guided order pickers supported safe and efficient access to goods. The pick-and-pack benches, gravity-fed conveyors and integrated power and Wi-Fi created a streamlined process from picking through to packing and dispatch.
The phased design also gave Bergen Logistics the flexibility to quickly introduce additional racking supporting contract wins, and scalable growth.
